Fleet Foxes, Glasgow Academy
I always find gig photography to be an extremely gratifying experience – with a limited amount of time, it’s challenging to come away with an image that captures the mood of the concert whilst at the same time recording something unique!
Whilst I felt the images captured something unique in comparison to others, I couldn’t help but come away wishing I’d used a wide angle to capture some of the performance. For those who haven’t seen nor heard of the Fleet Foxes, I can only point you in the direction of their MySpace. A number of their videos have utilised stop motion, and are definetly worth a watch for those who are interested.
Julia and the Doogans, Admiral, Glasgow
I would talk about how great Julia and the Doogans are, but unfortunately, I wasn’t blessed with the gift of being able to combine numerous superlatives into a comprehensible structure. Take reference from the following review at Glasgow Podcart.
Whilst I typically have quite a varied musical taste, I do have certain musical weaknesses, namely the cello and glockenspiel (it’s how Sigur Ros snagged me in many years ago) and Julia and the Doogans have both in abundance. If you aren’t familiar with the band, have a listen at the band’s MySpace
The Dykeenies, King Tut’s, Glasgow
The Dykeenies gig at the King Tut’s in Glasgow. As mentioned in the previous post, this was a warm up show before playing on the Radio 1/NME stage at T in the Park; so in relative terms, it was quite an intimate gig. I should probably trim the photos a bit but for the moment, I’ve put 11 up! Any feedback, please share!
Alto Elite, King Tut’s, Glasgow
Covered The Dykeenies T in the Park warm up gig at the King Tut’s last Thursday which had support from Alto Elite. I’d recently upgraded my camera so this was one of my opportunities to properly test it out. One of the big hindrances of shooting in the smaller venues around Glasgow is the poor lighting and my last camera was suffering at iso 1600, which is an absolute must in some of these venues!
Although they’re not exactly d3 noise-free shots, I was happy with the results. My next purchase = Prime Lens that’ll open wide enough to make the most of the lighting!
Athlete, Oran Mor, Glasgow
Got the chance to shoot Athlete at their gig in Glasgow the other day – 30th June 2009. Overall, it was a pretty good experience; if somewhat difficult from a shooting perspective. With no photo pit, I was stuck amongst the crowd which made it hard to get some varied shots and coupled with some really poor house lighting, I had my work cut out for me. Unfortunately for the rest of the band, I had to make this a singer-centric photo op, as the lighting just wasn’t there for the back of the stage.
As the lighting was a bit flat, there was a certain level of experimentation involved. A collection of shots can be found below, a few not exactly representing your typical concert shots and certainly not images I’d feel were aimed at publications, but as stand alones I felt they were quite strong.
